Larimar is a rare and beautiful blue variety of the mineral pectolite, found only in the Dominican Republic, specifically in the Barahona region. It is known for its stunning ocean-like hues, which range from light sky blue to deep volcanic blue, often with white marbling that resembles sunlight reflecting on water.
Key Characteristics of Larimar:
Color: Shades of blue ranging from pale sky blue to deep turquoise or greenish blue. The most valuable larimar tends to be a vivid, intense blue.
Appearance: Typically translucent to opaque with white streaks or swirls. The patterns often resemble waves or cloudy skies.
Hardness: 4.5 to 5 on the Mohs scale, making it relatively soft and more prone to scratches or damage than harder gemstones like quartz or sapphire.
Composition: Larimar is a sodium calcium silicate hydroxide mineral (a variety of pectolite).
Formation: It forms in volcanic cavities where hot gases cause mineral-rich solutions to crystallize into larimar.
Rarity: Larimar is considered a semi-precious stone and is unique to a specific area in the Caribbean, which adds to its appeal and value.
Symbolism & Metaphysical Properties (in crystal healing):
Often associated with the throat chakra.
Believed to promote calm, communication, and emotional healing.
Sometimes called the "Stone of Atlantis", based on a legend that ties the stone to the mythical lost city.
