Serafinite, commonly known as Seraphinite, is a rare, forest-green gemstone prized for its shimmering, silvery inclusions that resemble bird feathers or angel wings.
- Appearance: Typically dark green to gray with a pearly to silky luster. It exhibits chatoyancy, a light-reflecting effect that creates its signature "silver wing" patterns.
- Hardness: It is a very soft stone, measuring only 2 to 2.5 on the Mohs scale, making it delicate and best suited for pendants or earrings rather than rings.
- Origin: The only known significant source in the world is the Korshunovskoye iron deposit in Eastern Siberia, Russia.
Naming and History
The name is derived from the Seraphim, a high order of angels in Judeo-Christian tradition, due to the stone's feathery appearance. It was first described by the Russian mineralogist Nikolay Koksharov in the late 19th century.
Common Uses
- Jewelry: Often cut into cabochons or beads for pendants and bracelets.
- Collectibles: Favored by mineral collectors as polished slabs or "palm stones".
- Metaphysical: In crystal healing, it is used for meditation, spiritual enlightenment, and connecting with angelic realms.
